Beethoven’s Sonata for Piano & Violin in G marks a turning point for chamber music where the violin and piano are no longer soloist and accompaniment, but equal partners in dialogue. Schubert’s Fantasie in C builds on Beethoven’s legacy – You will hear the violin and piano interweave in an almost symphonic texture. The structure is freer (hence the “fantasy” title), and the virtuosic writing foreshadows the later Romantic style. In Schumann’s Violin Sonata in A minor, you can recognize the influence of both Beethoven and Schubert. The violin often mirrors or shadows the piano, reflecting Schumann’s introspective style. These three pieces are an excellent example of the evolution of the sonata form.
