SUMMARY:Homeschool Program Featuring Piano Trios by Grieg & Tchaikovsky
DESCRIPTION:Both Grieg and Tchaikovsky are primarily known for their orchestral works\, so it is fascinating to dive into their limited but brilliant and influential chamber music repertoire. Grieg’s Andante con moto is intriguing in that it is a standalone movement in an unfinished piano trio. After Grieg’s death\, his close friend and colleague\, Julius Röntgen\, found his Andante con moto and wrote to Grieg’s widow\, Nina\, saying\, “It is a beautiful piece and completely in order…What a solemnity it conveys! How he can’t get enough of that single theme\, that even in the major mode retains its mourning character\, and then develops so beautifully its full power…The piece can very well stand by itself and does not at all give the impression of being a fragment\, as it constitutes a perfect entity in itself.” He wondered\, however\, if Grieg would have wanted the unfinished piece published\, so it remained unpublished until 1978 when it was placed in a full catalogue of his work. \nTchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor was composed as a memorial to his close friend and mentor\, Nikolai Rubinstein\, the esteemed pianist\, conductor\, and founder of the Moscow Conservatory. Though Tchaikovsky initially doubted the effectiveness of the piano trio format\, believing that the piano could overwhelm the strings\, he ultimately embraced the challenge\, creating a masterful and balanced tribute that stands as a cornerstone of the piano trio repertoire. \nProgram\n~~Excerpts from \n\nGrieg Andante con moto in Cm.\, EG 116\nTchaikovsky Piano Trio in Am.\, Op. 50\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Edward Arron – Cello\, Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Homeschool Program Featuring Violin Sonatas by Schumann\, Beethoven\, & Schubert
DESCRIPTION:***VENUE CHANGE*** \ndue to circumstances beyond our control the venue for this event has moved to the community room underneath the UCC church on Central Square in Keene. Parking is available behind the church. \nBeethoven’s Sonata for Piano & Violin in G marks a turning point for chamber music where the violin and piano are no longer soloist and accompaniment\, but equal partners in dialogue. Schubert’s Fantasie in C builds on Beethoven’s legacy – You will hear the violin and piano interweave in an almost symphonic texture. The structure is freer (hence the “fantasy” title)\, and the virtuosic writing foreshadows the later Romantic style. In Schumann’s Violin Sonata in A minor\, you can recognize the influence of both Beethoven and Schubert. The violin often mirrors or shadows the piano\, reflecting Schumann’s introspective style. These three pieces are an excellent example of the evolution of the sonata form. \nProgram\n~~Excerpts from \n\nSchumann Violin Sonata in Am.\, Op. 105\nBeethoven Sonata for Piano & Violin in G\, Op. 96\nSchubert Fantasie in C\, D.934\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Homeschool Program Featuring Piano Trios by Brahms & Schubert
DESCRIPTION:Johannes Brahms very much admired Franz Schubert and was influenced by his mastery of chamber music. He even edited and championed Schubert’s works\, and his Piano Trio in C minor can be seen as a late-Romantic response to Schubert’s early Romantic ideals. Brahms wrote this trio – his last for violin\, cello\, and piano – during the summer of 1886\, which he spent on Lake Thun in Switzerland. From the windows of his room\, Brahms could look out over the lake to the immense glaciers of the Bernese Highlands\, and many believe that the power of that rugged view made itself felt in the music Brahms composed there. The Piano Trio in C minor certainly communicates tension from its opening instant. \nSchubert’s Piano Trio in E-flat was the only one of his large-scale and serious instrumental works that was actually published before his death. This trio shows the range of Schubert’s invention\, in the dramatic announcement of the first theme\, and in the rich melodies which follow it to its jubilant end. \nProgram\n–Excerpts from \nBrahms Piano Trio in Cm.\, Op. 101\nSchubert Piano Trio in E-flat\, D.929 \nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Thomas Mesa – Cello & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Homeschool Program Featuring Piano Quartets by Schubert\, Dohnányi\, & Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Uncover three hidden gems of chamber music and follow the journey of this chain of stylistic influence from Schubert’s impact on phrasing in Romantic chamber music taken up by Brahms\, who in turn influenced Dohnányi. Dohnányi was a Hungarian composer\, educated in Budapest\, and Brahms was heavily influenced by Hungarian folk music. Vienna\, where Schubert lived\, was a cultural hub with strong links to Hungarian music and musicians. \nSchubert’s Adagio and Rondo Concertante in F really functions as a mini piano concerto\, with the piano given the spotlight. Dohnányi’s Piano Quartet in F sharp minor and Brahms’s Piano Quartet in Gm are both prolific but at the same time stylistically contrasting works. They both feature the piano as well\, as is reflected in their titles. \nProgram – Excerpts from: \nSchubert Adagio and Rondo Concertante in F\, D.487\nDohnányi Piano Quartet in F#m.\nBrahms Piano Quartet No. 1 in Gm.\, Op. 25 \nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Masumi Per Rostad – Viola\, Thomas Mesa – Cello\, Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Homeschool Presentation of Masterful Piano Trios: Beethoven & Shostakovich
DESCRIPTION:Experience a powerful journey through two of the greatest piano trios ever composed\, showcasing the brilliance and emotional depth of Beethoven and Shostakovich. \nThe program opens with Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat major\, Op. 97\, “Archduke.” This piece is dedicated to Archduke Rudolph\, who was Beethoven’s piano student\, his only full-fledged composition student\, and his good friend. It was Beethoven’s greatest and final piano trio. Written during a time of optimism in Beethoven’s life\, the piece is upbeat with expansive structure and noble character. \nIn contrast\, Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor\, Op. 67 is expressive and somber. It was written in memory of Ivan Sollertinsky\, Shostakovich’s friend and colleague who had died earlier in the year\, during a time when the Russians were struggling against a long German occupation. \nJoin us for an unforgettable program of artistry and contrast—where Beethoven’s triumphant elegance meets Shostakovich’s searing intensity. \n Program excerpts: \n\nBeethoven Piano Trio in B-flat major\, Op.97\, “Archduke”\nShostakovich Piano Trio No.2 in E minor\, Op. 67\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Edward Arron – Cello\, Nicholas Burns – Piano
