DESCRIPTION:Brahms very much admired Schubert and was influenced by his mastery of chamber music. He even edited and championed Schubert’s works\, and his Piano Trio in C minor can be seen as a late-Romantic response to Schubert’s early Romantic ideals. Brahms wrote this trio – his last for violin\, cello\, and piano – during the summer of 1886\, which he spent on Lake Thun in Switzerland. From the windows of his room\, Brahms could look out over the lake to the immense glaciers of the Bernese Highlands\, and many believe that the power of that rugged view made itself felt in the music Brahms composed there. The Piano Trio in C minor certainly communicates tension from its opening instant. \nSchubert’s Piano Trio in E-flat was the only one of his large-scale and serious instrumental works that was actually published before his death. DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Grammy-nominated British vocal ensemble VOCES8 is proud to inspire people through music and share the joy of singing. Touring globally\, the group performs an extensive repertory both in its a cappella concerts and in collaborations with leading musicians\, orchestras\, and conductors. Versatility and a celebration of diverse musical expression are central to the ensemble’s performance and education ethos which is shared both online and in person. They are the world’s top-streaming classical vocal group. VOCES8 is passionate about music education and is the flagship ensemble of the VOCES8 Foundation which actively promotes ‘Music Education For All’\, reaching up to 40\,000 people annually. \nVOCES8 has performed at many notable venues since its inception in 2005 including Wigmore Hall\, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg\, Berlin Philharmonie\, Cité de la Musique Paris\, Vienna Konzerthaus\, Tokyo Opera City\, NCPA Beijing\, Sydney Opera House\, Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall\, Victoria Concert Hall Singapore\, Palacio de Bellas Artes Mexico City amongst many others. This season\, their 20th Anniversary season\, they will perform over 100 concerts around the world including a birthday celebration concert at the Barbican\, London. \nThe pandemic provided the impetus for two continuing initiatives: the VOCES8 Digital Academy\, an online choral programme and the LIVE From London digital festival which has broadcast over 150 concerts with over 250\,000 tickets sold. \nVOCES8 is a Decca Classics artists well as on the VOCES8 Records label. The recording of Christopher Tin’s “The Lost Birds” was nominated for a Grammy-Award in 2023. Their new album is “Nightfall”\, a collection of reflective and transcendent music inspired by the night. Recent releases are “A Choral Christmas”; “Home” conducted by Eric Whitacre\, featuring his work “The Sacred Veil” and “Seven Psalms” by Paul Simon. \nVOCES8 is proud to be working with Ken Burton as Composer-in-Residence and Jim Clements as Arranger-in-Residence. But diving deeper than that\, together they form a compelling artistic trajectory. \nMozart’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in A is a staple of the classical repertoire and serves as the foundation on this musical path as it lays the groundwork for later sonatas. Next comes Fauré\, who brings the element of French lyricism to the sonata structure. Fauré admired Classical form\, and in his Violin Sonata in A he keeps that structure while expanding harmonic language\, carrying Mozart’s clarity into a more expressive and openly passionate 19th-century version. Finally\, we have our late-romantic culmination\, Franck’s Violin Sonata in A\, which is among his most well-known compositions and widely considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written. DESCRIPTION:Program \n\nFranck Andantino Quietoso in E-flat\, Op. 6\nFaure Elegy Op. 24\nSaint-Saens Piano Quartet in B-flat\, Op. 41\nFaure Piano Quartet No.1 in C minor\, Op. 15\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Masumi Per Rostad – Viola\, Thomas Mesa – Cello\, Nicholas Burns – Piano \nThese four thrilling pieces of chamber music were all written in and inspired by the evocative city of Paris. \nBritish-American violinist\, Louisa Stonehill is a dedicated chamber musician and serves as Artistic & Program Director of Ashuelot Concerts. She has recorded four critically-acclaimed albums for Nimbus and Lyrita and performed all over the world\, from London to New York to most recently\, Beijing. Louisa performs on a modern violin\, made in 2023 by one of the world’s leading violin makers\, Glen Collins. \nMasumi Per Rostad regularly tours internationally and has performed at many of the most prominent festivals\, including Marlboro\, Spoleto USA\, Music@Menlo\, Caramoor\, Music in the Vineyards\, Bowdoin\, and the Aspen Music Festival. His guest violist collaborations include programs with the St Lawrence\, Ying\, Pavel Haas\, Miró\, Verona\, and Emerson String Quartets\, as well as with the Horszowski Trio. He toured and recorded extensively as a former member of the International Sejong Soloists. He can be heard on the Cedille Records\, Naxos\, Hyperion\, Musical Observations\, Bridge\, and Tzadik record labels. He performs on an Amati viola made in Cremona\, Italy in 1619. \nCuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa received the 2023 Sphinx Medal of Excellence Award\, won First Prize in the 2016 Sphinx Competition\, and Astral Artists 2017 National Auditions. He has appeared as soloist with major orchestras such as The Philadelphia Orchestra\, The Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl\, The Cleveland Orchestra\, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra\, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Tommy plays a cello on loan by Tarisio made by Guilio Gigli\, c.1789. \nBritish Pianist Nicholas Burns has dedicated most of his professional life to chamber music after initially pursuing a conducting career. He regularly appears as part of the Steinberg Duo & Samara Piano Quartet. He has performed all over the world and recorded four critically acclaimed albums for Nimbus & Lyrita. Nick is the Artistic & Executive Director of Ashuelot Concerts.
