SUMMARY:Piano Trios by Dvořák\, Haydn\, & Mendelssohn
DESCRIPTION:Dvořák’s Piano Trio in G minor\, Haydn’s “Gypsy Rondo” Piano Trio in G major\, and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in C minor all incorporate elements of folk music into the Classical piano trio form\, each through their own stylistic lens\, unique story\, and historical context. \nIn August of 1875\, Dvořák lost his newborn daughter within days of her birth\, and he composed the G minor Piano Trio four months later\, over a course of just 17 days. It was the first piece he wrote following this loss\, and it led the way for a burst of brilliant music from Dvořák. The beautiful\, flowing melodies in this piece include many elements of Czech folk music. The music can be interpreted perhaps to serve to affirm and celebrate life. Haydn’s “Gypsy Rondo” incorporates Hungarian folk dance rhythms in its final movement\, with syncopated accents and asymmetrical phrasing. While it is a Classical work\, it is deeply informed by the vernacular music Haydn encountered in Hungary and Austria. Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in C minor does not quote folk tunes directly but integrates folk-like rhythms in a Romantic style. \nProgram \n\nDvořák Piano Trio in Gm.\, Op. 26\nHaydn Piano Trio in G\, Hob. XV/25\, “Gypsy Rondo”\nMendelssohn Piano Trio in Cm.\, Op. 66\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Francisco Vila – Cello\, & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Violin Sonatas by Schumann\, Beethoven\, & Schubert
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This concert was originally scheduled to take place at the Bellows Falls Opera House. Due to circumstances beyond our control we have now moved this concert to Alyson’s Orchard. We are very grateful to Alyson’s for accommodating this event at short notice. \nLooking for something fun and unique to do on Valentine’s Day this year? We have the perfect date night for you! Bring your loved one to a concert for a romantic evening at Alyson’s Orchard presented by Ashuelot Concerts. Enjoy beautiful Violin Sonatas by Schumann\, Beethoven\, & Schubert. \nBeethoven’s Sonata for Piano & Violin in G marks a turning point for chamber music where the violin and piano are no longer soloist and accompaniment\, but equal partners in dialogue. Schubert’s Fantasie in C builds on Beethoven’s legacy – You will hear the violin and piano interweave in an almost symphonic texture. The structure is freer (hence the “fantasy” title)\, and the virtuosic writing foreshadows the later Romantic style. In Schumann’s Violin Sonata in A minor\, you can recognize the influence of both Beethoven and Schubert. The violin often mirrors or shadows the piano\, reflecting Schumann’s introspective style. These three pieces are an excellent example of the evolution of the sonata form. \nProgram \n\nSchumann Violin Sonata in Am.\, Op. 105\nBeethoven Sonata for Piano & Violin in G\, Op. 96\nSchubert Fantasie in C\, D.934\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Tolstoy Inspired... Music by Prokofiev\, Janáček\, & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Connecting these works through the lens of Leo Tolstoy – particularly his novella The Kreutzer Sonata – reveals a powerful intersection of music\, psychology\, and morality. All three works orbit the emotional and thematic space carved out by Tolstoy’s philosophical engagement with music. \nBeethoven’s “Kreutzer” sonata is not just a title reference\, it is the catalyst of the story’s crisis. In the novella\, the protagonist hears this sonata performed by his wife and a violinist\, and it ignites a jealous\, existential unraveling that leads to murder. For Tolstoy\, Beethoven’s sonata embodies passionate intensity\, music of dangerous emotional power that bypasses reason and evokes involuntary passions. He later described music as “a shortcut to the heart\,” and a potentially morally hazardous one. Janáček takes Tolstoy’s fear of music’s power and turns it into artistic form\, imitating not the surface of the “Kreutzer Sonata” but its emotional impact: alienation\, desire\, and emotional rupture. Prokofiev reflects a post-Romantic\, post-Tolstoyan world where beauty is aesthetic\, not moral\, and emotional ambiguity prevails; a kind of artistic answer to the dilemma posed by Tolstoy. \nProgram \nProkofiev Cinq Melodies\, Op. 35\nJanáček Violin Sonata\nBeethoven Sonata for Piano & Violin in A\, Op. 47\, “Kreutzer” \nLouisa Stonehill – Violin & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Violin Sonatas by Mozart\, Fauré\, & Franck
DESCRIPTION:These three violin sonatas are most obviously connected by their key of A major which is historically associated with brightness\, lyricism\, and warmth – qualities that lend themselves well to the violin’s natural singing quality. But diving deeper than that\, together they form a compelling artistic trajectory. \nMozart’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in A is a staple of the classical repertoire and serves as the foundation on this musical path as it lays the groundwork for later sonatas. Next comes Fauré\, who brings the element of French lyricism to the sonata structure. Fauré admired Classical form\, and in his Violin Sonata in A he keeps that structure while expanding harmonic language\, carrying Mozart’s clarity into a more expressive and openly passionate 19th-century version. Finally\, we have our late-romantic culmination\, Franck’s Violin Sonata in A\, which is among his most well-known compositions and widely considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written. This work is full of emotion and is spectacularly cyclical\, meaning themes recur across movements\, creating a unified narrative arc. \nProgram \nMozart Sonata for Piano & Violin in A\, K.526\nFauré Violin Sonata in A\, Op. 13\nFranck Violin Sonata in A \nLouisa Stonehill – Violin & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Piano Quartets by Schubert\, Dohnányi\, & Brahms
DESCRIPTION:Uncover three hidden gems of chamber music and follow the journey of this chain of stylistic influence from Schubert’s impact on phrasing in Romantic chamber music taken up by Brahms\, who in turn influenced Dohnányi. Dohnányi was a Hungarian composer\, educated in Budapest\, and Brahms was heavily influenced by Hungarian folk music. Vienna\, where Schubert lived\, was a cultural hub with strong links to Hungarian music and musicians. \nSchubert’s Adagio and Rondo Concertante in F really functions as a mini piano concerto\, with the piano given the spotlight. Dohnányi’s Piano Quartet in F sharp minor and Brahms’s Piano Quartet in Gm are both prolific but at the same time stylistically contrasting works. They both feature the piano as well\, as is reflected in their titles. \nProgram \nSchubert Adagio and Rondo Concertante in F\, D.487\nDohnányi Piano Quartet in F#m.\nBrahms Piano Quartet No. 1 in Gm.\, Op. 25 \nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Masumi Per Rostad – Viola\, Thomas Mesa – Cello\, Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Spring with Beethoven & the Schumanns
DESCRIPTION:This program features pieces by both Clara and Robert Schumann\, a renowned 19th-century musical couple whose lives and works deeply influenced Romantic-era music. Clara\, a virtuosic pianist and composer\, balanced a wildly successful concert career with raising their 8 children\, while also steadfastly championing Robert’s compositions. Robert\, a visionary composer\, was inspired by Clara and composed prolifically in the years after their wedding. Robert struggled with mental illness throughout his life and suffered a tragic early death\, after which Clara promoted his music and continued her concert tours in Europe for decades. \nWe look forward to sharing their story with you through Clara’s Three Romances and Robert’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor! \nProgram \n\nClara Schumann Three Romances\, Op. 22\nBeethoven Violin Sonata in F major\, Op.24\, “Spring”\nRobert Schumann Violin Sonata No.2 in D minor\, Op.121\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin & Nicholas Burns – Piano
