SUMMARY:Spring with Beethoven & the Schumanns
DESCRIPTION:This program features pieces by both Clara and Robert Schumann\, a renowned 19th-century musical couple whose lives and works deeply influenced Romantic-era music. Clara\, a virtuosic pianist and composer\, balanced a wildly successful concert career with raising their 8 children\, while also steadfastly championing Robert’s compositions. Robert\, a visionary composer\, was inspired by Clara and composed prolifically in the years after their wedding. Robert struggled with mental illness throughout his life and suffered a tragic early death\, after which Clara promoted his music and continued her concert tours in Europe for decades. \nWe look forward to sharing their story with you through Clara’s Three Romances and Robert’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in D minor! \nProgram \n\nClara Schumann Three Romances\, Op. 22\nBeethoven Violin Sonata in F major\, Op.24\, “Spring”\nRobert Schumann Violin Sonata No.2 in D minor\, Op.121\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin & Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Piano Quartets by Mozart\, Beethoven\, & Strauss
DESCRIPTION:Richard Strauss is best known as one of the last of the Great Romantic Composers. His musical language became increasingly complex and chromatic in later life when he focussed his efforts almost exclusively on orchestral works and opera. However\, as a young man Strauss was raised on a strict musical diet of Classical masterworks by a very conservative musical Father. Early in his career\, Strauss turned to chamber music and this program celebrates the influence of Mozart and Beethoven in Strauss’s gigantic Piano Quartet. \nProgram \n\nMozart Piano Quartet in E-flat major\, K.493\nBeethoven Piano Quartet in C major\, WoO 36\, No.3\nStrauss Piano Quartet\, Op.13\n\nLouisa Stonehill – Violin\, Masumi Per Rostad – Viola\, Francisco Vila – Cello\, Nicholas Burns – Piano

SUMMARY:Valentine's Day with The Schumann Quartet
DESCRIPTION:“Fire and energy. The Schumann Quartet plays staggeringly well […] without doubt one of the very best formations among today’s abundance of quartets\, […] with sparkling virtuosity and a willingness to astonish.” \n\nSueddeutsche Zeitung • Harald Eggebrecht • March 10th\, 2017 \nThe three brothers Mark\, Erik and Ken Schumann have been playing together since their earliest childhood – meanwhile violist Veit Hertenstein completes the quartet. The four musicians enjoy the way they communicate without words. The Schumann Quartet has reached a stage where anything is possible\, because it has dispensed with certainties. This also has consequences for audiences\, which from one concert to the next have to be prepared for all eventualities: “A work really develops only in a live performance\,” the quartet says. “That is ‘the real thing’\, because we ourselves never know what will happen. On the stage\, all imitation disappears\, and you automatically become honest with yourself. Then you can create a bond with the audience – communicate with it in music.” \nProgram \n\nMozart String Quartet No.20 in D major\, K.499\, “Hoffmeister”\nProkofiev String Quartet No.1 in B minor\, Op.50\nSmetana String Quartet No.1\, JB 1:105\, “From My Life”\n\nThe Schumann Quartet: Erik Schumann\, Ken Schumann – Violins\, Veit Hertenstein – Viola\, Mark Schumann – Violoncello
