    New Year's Gathering

On New Year’s day in 1888 the violinist Adolf Brodsky and his wife conspired to arrange a “chance” meeting between Brahms, Tchaikovsky & Grieg. Even more remarkable is that this event was chronicled in detail by both Tchaikovsky & Anna Brodsky in their diary. While Brahms & Tchaikovsky were uneasy companions due to their musical differences, the event was saved by the wit and grace of Grieg and his wife. Anna Brodsky described their shared meal as being “more like a children’s party than a gathering of great composers”

To celebrate the unlikely friendships that were formed that day, the Steinberg Duo explore the work of these Great Composers through each other’s ears and reminiscences.

    Beethoven, Stravinsky, Bloch & Reizenstein

    Musical Immigrants
The Steinberg Duo, themselves recent immigrants, explore the profound effect moving countries had on four very different musical personalities: Beethoven left his native Bonn for Vienna shortly before his 22nd Birthday, never to return. Stravinsky spent an increasing amount of time in Western Europe before eventually emigrating to the USA. Swiss born Ernest Bloch studied all over Europe before finally settling in the US in 1916, and Franz Reizenstein fled from the Nazi regime for London. This program encapsulates the cultural enrichment that emigrating had on these four great composers.

Beethoven Sonata for Piano & Violin in G, Op.96
    Stravinsky Duo Concertant
    Bloch Nuit exotique
    Reizenstein Violin Sonata in G#
